Clause collection 03 / External Walls Above DPC

A wall is only as dependableas its junctions.

The broad wall construction is usually easy to name. Performance is more often lost at openings, cavity interruptions, movement joints, abutments and penetrations. The current B series contains 20 numbered clauses covering the wall and the details that allow it to work.

01 / Where difficulty begins

The elevations can look complete while critical details remain undecided.

A general wall description does not tell the contractor how continuity is maintained where the construction changes.

Lintels, trays, closers, insulation, movement joints and penetrations are small parts of the drawing, but they govern how the completed wall manages water, heat, movement and fire.

When those requirements are scattered or assumed, tenderers price different details and the missing decisions eventually return as site queries, substitutions or defects.

02 / Where assumptions gather

The wall is built one interface at a time.

01

Openings

Lintels, end bearings, cavity trays, stop ends, weeps, closers and insulation must work as one coordinated detail.

02

Movement

Joint locations, widths, ties, sealants and the treatment of finishes need defining before cracking writes the detail afterwards.

03

Continuity

Insulation, cavity protection, fire barriers and weathering must continue around penetrations, abutments and changes in construction.

03 / The practical answer

Specify the wall. Then specify what interrupts it.

The B series separates recurring wall operations into clauses that can be selected and coordinated with the project details.

The aim is a specification that defines the principal construction and the junctions affecting performance without burying the reader in irrelevant method statements. The professional retains control of the selected system, appearance and project-specific design.

04 / Within the collection

20 clauses covering the wall and the details that allow it to perform.

The collection currently contains 20 numbered B-series clauses. It remains under publication review while the clauses and supporting material are checked as a complete working collection.

Preparing for publication
